Description

Burda pattern 7517

I had some problems. The fabric I used was a cotton voile but next time I would choose something with a bit of a stretch like stretch cotton sateen. Anyway, it wasn’t hard to make, I’m just not thrilled with it. The pleats are strange but maybe if my bust were smaller it would be okay. Sure doesn’t fit me like the model on the envelope.

Material Notes

cotton voile

Bonus points for the print! Delightfully unexpected and fun.

Nope. The fit is just weird. Period. I am not especially large-busted, and the pleats are equally weird on me. My fabric did have the tiniest bit of stretch. It didn’t help much. It’s really a shame because I love the dress on the pattern envelope, but in real life it just doesn’t work. If it weren’t so much work to unpick the facing, I’d try making the pleats go in the opposite direction so that it basically ended up with a large box pleat at the bust. I have this one stashed in that infamous made-but-worn-once-pile. To make things worse my silk wrinkles a ton and the pleats look ridiculous. I’m planning on tacking them down if I ever get around to it, although I’m so ambivalent about the dress I don’t know if I will. Your busy print and non-contrasting ties make it more wearable though.

Ya, I agree about everything you said. I just finished taking out the front waist pleats and am trying to figure out what to do from there. I put it on like that with the belt and it just looks more of a mess with all the extra fabric. Maybe gathered elastic and no belt? Maybe darts instead of the pleats? What do you think?

In my case the ties were purely decorative. They didn’t cinch the dress at all, as it was relatively fitted (minus the weird gaping caused by the pleats. My unfinished solution was to put it on and pin down the pleats. I’ll eventually get around to sewing them down as if they were strangely shaped princess seams, which, in effect, I suppose they are. Somewhere on here I’ve seen a dress with inverted neckline princess seams, maybe from the 04/10 issue, and that might be a good place to start trying to fix the craziness.
