Step 4 Prepare the back-piece

Cut a strip of fabric about 30cm long and 1,5cm wide. The stretch should be across the strip (so that it stretches as little as possible along its length). Fold it in three (se the picture). Finish the neckline on the back-piece by making a fold along the seam-allowance, and stitching the folded strip of fabric on the wrong side of the fabric (pin first). Use ordinary straight stitches to prevent the neckline from stretching. Stitch about 1,5-2mm from the edges of the strip.

  The strip is just to stabilize the back neck of the dress. If you just finished the edge and turned it under and sewed it, it would eventually stretch over time (and lead to disappointment!). Instead of the fabric strip, you could always just sew some clear elastic into the seam.

  I got lost at this point – I do not have the smallest idea what I am supposed to do here. When I made mine, I attached the strip of fabric, but it looked so weird and bad that I ripped it away and finished it differently. What is the strap there for? Thanks a lot for help! I also had another problem – when I made the dress and wore it with the shoulder parts close together, the back neckline would fall out down (I am not sure how to explain it, but it was not tight on my neck, but looked as if it was not tight enough and kept falling). The only solution was to wear it with the shoulder parts more apart, but then the arm opening looked really bad (not laying on my arm, but standing away from it). What did I do wrong?

    jreneedesign’s answer is really the answer to both your questions, the back neckline falls out because there is not enough to stabilize it. If you follow my instructions and accidently make the strip too long the neckline will fall out/wobble too. Make sure you make it the correct length and not too long! Or use clear elastic. Have a look in something ready-made and you’ll find similar solutions (sometimes even a grosgrain ribbon)!

  I really can’t understand this step. Can anyone explain what it is for? and Am I going to sew along the strip to the neckline or sew just the endings of the strip to neck?

    Sorry about the late answer, I totally didn’t see your comment! You should sew all along the strip, as shown in the picture (the dotted lines are two seams).
