Burda Style For people who sew

This is just a brief project which I want to share with you by giving you the instructions so that you may do this yourself if you choose. to minimise the use of words I have taken photos of this project at every possible stage including showing you some fmillinery tools and skills used to facilitate the makings of sew/blocked hats.

1- Head fitting template (useful) to know your own shape(head) & measurements can be used on other clients too.

Also this is useful for cutting head “circles” the head is not round but slightly oval and the usual standard size is 22/22.5 inch (around 56cm)

I will provide brief instructions to make cheap easy alternative.

2-Grosgrain/Petersham is used by milliners to line inside hats or make the so called internal sweat band.

3- I would suggest that all permanent template/patterns for hats be made out of cardboard/packaging or cereal boxes as these would last much longer than standard paper and these templates are actually useful to make other style of hats (I will show you this in due course with other instructions)

4- I use gummed jute to make the peak, but this is not written in stone you can use interfacing with teflon which is only available in certain countries, light cardboard 9old fashioned way) or any other adhesive interfacing which you can find at any haberdashery stores such as adhesive webbing!!

5- A serger/ Overlock machine is only necessary if you use fabric that frays easily. (thus ensuring that longevity of your design/creation)

6-The decor finish is not written in stone, so just please feel free to add, a flower – a motif – whatever you want to complete your cap in the look you really desire.

Material Notes

Interfacing, left over wool fabric, gummed jute, threads, sewing machine, serger, head fitting template, tailor’s chalk, pins, mitre/square or ruler, pvc, leather punch and 4 white eyelets & eyelet tool, petersham/grosgrain ribbon. A styrofoam head/poupee/ or wig head (you can find this cheaply at any hair & beauty stores)

A4 paper or pattern paper, rubber, pencil and rulers needed, then old card packaging, cereal boxes etc to make master patterns for future designs necessary & also pins etc
