Burda Style For people who sew

For Australia Day a couple of years ago one of my friends hosted a party with the theme being ‘wear a cork hat’. I couldn’t bear the thought of turning up in the typical ‘swag-man’s’ fly bashing hat, so I decided to create my own twist on the theme.
Being February, and outside of spring racing carnival season Spotlight was out of fascinator-hat bases and I ended up making my own base from a piece of folded and shaped tapestry mesh. The rosebuds and leaves were carved from champagne corks, see process photo, and the stems were some floristry wires that I had left over from a model I made for university. I pinned it all together until I had the right shape, and then stitched it up.
All in all, it was a success, though my best friend and I were the only ones who turned up in ‘cork hats’!
