I am fairly obsessed with sewing work dresses of late – there’s just something about only having to deal with one item of clothing that suits my non-morning-person self.
This one is from an early 60s Spadea pattern, designed by Herbert Sondheim (for any musical theatre lovers out there (NOT ME), that’s Stephen Sondheim’s father), with the colour scheme Mad Men in inspiration. I’ve made this from wool tweed and silk dupioni, both backed with silk organza because the tweed was a little too drapey for the tailored design.
I did make a muslin but didn’t bother sewing the hated sleeve gussets before deciding the fit was perfect – mistake! So its a bit roomy around the shoulders. No matter, I still rather love the dress.

Great job. Love the color and the silk panel down the middle. Drapes well and very stylish!

I like that the sleeves are a little drapey! Gives it just another feminine touch. LOVE the colors and the fit—you did this pattern justice! I have a similar vintage one in my stash, but instead of a straight line down the front, it’s triangular. Starts small at the top and widens towards the bottom. I have yet to figure out a color combo I like! Yours is stunning!

I love the colour combo and the style is very chic . It’s dresses like this that ALMOST make me want my old job back (which I hated but did get to wear nice clothes rather than my scruffy ones I wear now!)

I find dressing up is one way to make the long work days more interesting and fun… doesn’t quite make up for the wage slavery though!

I really like this. The color is great on you as well. I would like to make one a bit shorter and fuller at the bottom. Have you made any altered versions of this?
