I started this dress last summer on a whim the day before we had to leave to go to my friend Kat’s wedding in North Carolina. It was turning out so nicely, I decided I didn’t want to rush it, and boy did I take my time. I pulled it out of it’s storage bag about 2 weeks ago and finished it up.
The details : strapless dress with boned interior bustier. Bodice and hem colorblocked piecing with a empire waist in front which dips down to the true waist in the back. The white fabric is cotton, grey is silk and the coral is “assorted fibers” according to the tag at the fabric store. The bustier is canvas (but not regular canvas) and silk charmeuse.
cotton, silk dupioni, “assorted fibers”, silk charmeuse, dressmaking canvas, boning, tricot interfacing, thread, invisible zipper, hook & eye.

Thanks everyone! I confess I’m a little swamped right now, so I probably don’t have time to grade this to different sizes and digitize, but I’m working on a possible tutorial on how to turn a basic strapless pattern into this dress. That way it might be easier for everyone to make one in their size?

You could probably get the pattern scanned at a copy shop. I don’t know how much it would cost, but I can’t imagine it would be terribly expensive.

I’m trying to work out a possible tutorial for taking a basic strapless pattern and turning it into this dress as soon as I’m not crazy busy…I’ll try to hurry!

amazing! did you cut the red stripe on a circle or is it a straight stripe ok fabric?

the hem stripe is a contour band, so it has the exact curve of the hem of the grey fabric on top of it. To make one, you just decide how much of the skirt you want to be the stripe, mark that width around the bottom of the skirt, cut that part off and add seam allowance to the cut line on both the skirt and the stripe you cut off the bottom. Then cut and sew them together!

Thanks everyone, you guys are too nice! While I do make patterns for a living, I have absolutely NO idea how to get one from my pattern table onto a computer without the use of a very expensive computer system and digitizing table which I no longer have access to…do you guys know how? Help!! hahaha…

well, if you manage Corel Draw, you can draw it there and make it print at copyshop
Mar 26, 2010, 02.07 AMby grainline
hmm…I don’t have Corel Draw but I’m assuming it’s similar to Photoshop? Still, the pattern is much larger than my scanner and I’m not sure how I would freehand (or maybe free-mouse?) a pattern in a graphics program, I don’t think it would be very accurate. I’ll look into it though.
