Burda Style For people who sew
Description
I made this dress a year ago, and it was pure white silk chiffon and some lace at the top. Now it needs to be used again, so I decided to dye it with something eco-friendly, and choose to use coffe and tea. I had to undo the dress to be able to do it, and….belive it or not…..it went on very strong coffe and tea at least 8 times!!!! but did not take more color. The picture does not show it much…but I did it in a way that the color is stronger on the hem and open fronts and fades away to creamy color. Also, I had to take the lace apart, and dye the top in soft cream and the lace in stronger color. It took me many many hours!!!! but I like the way that it looks. It also has a chawl, and I use the same tecnique.

The dress is absolutely fantastic, dreamy, is the word that I used … but I also like the interior design of the room with the mirror wall, is such a splendid and interesting idea for gaining the illusion of space… and the furniture suits with the dress!! All the “ansamble” is special and with great style…

I have to thank you also for your words. Actually, the big big mirror, is a closet that divades the room, So, you see the mirror that is the back of the wardobe, I take double advantage of it. And the furniture, I have been buying litle by litle because if very difficult to get antiques in Costa Rica. Here, everything is new. My house is 50 years old, and is considered very old here!!! would you belive it!!!

Wow! So lovely! I have never dyed anything with tea or coffee before but I’ve thought about it! You have inspired me to give it a go. Can I just ask, though… does it smell of coffee?? I actually hate coffee (I know, I am odd) and I would feel really ill if I had to wear a dress that smells like coffee all day.

Oh Lily!!! I must tell you…..there is a wonderfull new perfume made out of the coffe flowers!!! tell your boyfriend never to get it for you!!! jajajaja.
Actually Lily, it has been washed so many times, that it does not smell at all. Now…..I can not, at this moment, tell you what happens with the heat of the body….So, I will tell you later, ok??? By the way, I am happy that you like it!!!

the dress is just stunning & the clever way you have ombre dyed it makes it even more special. I am too much of a scaredy cat to attempt cutting or sewing silk chiffon – do you have any tips as you are very obviously an advanced & super clever sewer :)

Hello Kiswistitcher!! thank you very much for your comment, and….do not be afraid of chiffon…..there is one easy tip with chiffon: when you are going to cut it, do not put the pattern pieces on top of the material, put the pattern first, and on top the silk chiffon. Since the chiffon is see-thrue, you will see the pattern, and belive it or not, this way is much much easier to cut the chiffon. When sewing, allways use french seams. If cutting cuts on the bies…..cut them and hang them , and then trim them to size, because you will find that the chiffon hangs a lot. Beatiful! The colour looks great too. I’ve been dabling with fabric dye lately and have come up with a few surprise colours which gets me into fits of laughter because it never turns out the colour I was looking for. I’m learning though ;-) and I only use cheap fabrics in case I damage them.
I’m glad you said it takes so long because I’ve spent hours doing it and never come out with anything great. lol

My dear Suzete, only with patiente….lots of it….we get wonderfull results. Your are cautios…..I am not….I am a bit crazy and just put something in my mind…..and for and unknown reason, never think that is not going to work…..many times I am surprise of the results…..but I do not give up until I find a way that I like…..

Thank you!!! yes, it does have a nice fiffing, because if you notice, the front part of the skirt, hangs nealy like an -A-line, but the back has so much matterial, that when moving, looks really nice.
