WOW! This coat is an amazing mix of classic lines with updated styling --and I love a coat that has all those touches of femininity. The tucks(LOVE!),the lovely color, fur collar, hem and elbow detail are all wonderful. Getting to wear such a beauty is a fringe benefit of making your own. Great job!

Love the reindeer fur detail…you could easily accomplish the same with faux fur, less pricey (also listed in my Fabric iPhone app). Really terrific coat, almost 1930s in its silhouette.

Yes it is a nice coat, but I am sad to see that you felt you needed fur to complement it. Pieces of dead animal, it just does not look pretty to me, I am sorry.

Using real fur is everytime polarizing. I only buy real fur on flea markets (like a removed collar from grandma’s coat) or like in this case a leftover on a christmas market. I am also an animal lover but I eat meat and I wear leather shoes. I think then we should use everything from an animal.

My point is just that I am sad that people are encouraging the use of fur in fashion. Yes, you bought it second hand, and in your case, it was probably a by-product, coming from an animal that was anyway going to be killed for meat. But even buying this type of fur will keep fur ‘a trend’ and will keep encouraging people to use fur in clothing, keeping chinchilla/ fox /… farms open where animals are specifically bred just for their fur, and not for their meat. These animals often have a miserable life and are killed in a horrible way. I just feel sad that they need to suffer because we would like to look pretty. This is just my personal opinion, I really really care about these animals a lot. I feel the same about foie gras, ‘cage-eggs’, etc etc. I just hope that their are other people out there that stop and think about these things a little bit.

I do really like your coat though, so good job on that!

You are absolutely right. I never would buy new fur from animals which die only for the fur. And with eggs and cheap meat I totally agree. But the typical animals like cows, pigs … which we eat, I think we should use everything out of it. Reindeer is very popular in the northern part.

I love the darts at the elbow, sleeves are so often overlooked when it comes to simple details like that. i really like how the hem flows to a longer length in the back and I’m with you, i love tucks!

It’s a butterick pattern no. B5295 but I changed the length and made a bow. The sleeves are from Burda Nr. 03/2009 – 122B. Collar and pockets are my idea.
And the best was to find the stripe of reindeer fur on the christmas market in Hamburg
