I decided to make my own version of the LBD featuring lace – seeing as it was popping up everywhere and I’m a ‘budget conscious student’!
I started out using the Burda magazine pattern 02-2009-124B but after I’d made it up, we all decided it was a little too conservative – so I started hacking it away (and ripping seams – argh!). Anyway, after two goes at the sleeves (finally ditching them altogether), and a bit of hacking away at the neckline, it was done! Hooray!
A stiff black matte satin as a 'lining' (Rathdowne Remnants), and black lace overlay (from Brunswick Fabrics). Also - about this exact lace - I have seen it EVERYWHERE lately - from high end to indie designer stores. After I made the dress, I had a brainwave and pulled out an (expensive) dress I bought 3 years ago - and realised it was the EXACT same lace on the bodice. Anyway, it's a bargain, and obviously popular with designers, so Melbournites - head to Brunswick Fabrics if you want in on the (super-cheap) lace! About $5m?

I agree with LYBU and others – it fits you like a glove and the work you did with the lace overlay is amazing!

hooray indeed! – as all that “hacking” produced a great result. nice work and fit. classic dress think you’ll get a return on the sewing investment as this is one of those pieces that you’ll have in your wardrobe for a while.
