Description

Well what a disappointment!

First time I made a dress using a dress model, I adjusted a pattern so that the waist was lower as I look very silly with high waisted clothes. (I have broad shoulders and slim waist.). I also made a full skirt instead of a fitted one.

I spent ages making the bodice fit perfectly, even with a trial one.
The seams were flat and perfect, everything looked lovely even on the inside – fully lined and overlocked.

Tried it on and I look like a square. The waist was still too high and very unflattering.

I need to adjust my dress model so it is wider looking and flatter side on. So far it has the same circumference as me but different shape. I might lengethen the body a bit too cause longer line clothes are more flattering on me.

So this is another project I wont wear. Seams like not many things I wear for myself work out.
although I am trying to look at it positively. I now know how to fit clothes properly on my dress doll and in future if I really like a design and fabric I’ll make one from muslin first. and TRY IT ON!

Material Notes

Not sure what the fabric is.. super light weight. Shiny (obviously) Cotton voile lined (easier to work with than silk lining)

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to make an “adjustable” dress form actually BE you. I just keep trying the project on, over and over and over. You can also make a duct tape dress form that actually WILL be very close to actually you.

The dress is lovely. I’m sorry it doesn’t fit the way you wanted.

Would it help to swap out the waist band (or add an additional one) to make it wider? That would drop the skirt down lower at least… Beautiful fabric and seams!

aawww that’s sad. this is why i dont have a dress form yet. i can try things on and fit it to me better than i can fit to a dress form. besides, i have funny lumps and bumps that the dress form doesnt have (and i’m not going to spend big bucks on a dress form, to then have to alter it).

i’m sure that a friend would love it. if not, you can try ebay/etsy!

Absoutely gorgeous – I am strickly a pattern person only, no huge modifications (ribbon instead of material made strings), elastic when I’m lazy…. button holes almost NEVER!!! It is a really beautiful dress, chin up you have amazing talent!

Like sewella said, it’s difficult to judge how it fits you, not seeing pictures of you in it, but it’s a beautiful dress on its own and very well made. So if you don’t like it to the point that you don’t think it will work for you combined with something (like a bolero, etc.), you could either give it as a gift to someone or even sell it on Ebay or through free ads on boards at stores or garage sale-type thing. And in the end, if you don’t want to go through the trouble of selling it, you could donate it! :-)

I agree! It’s a beautifully made dress, don’t hate it… And sometimes you feel that a piece looks wrong on you but it might just be that it actually does look great. Give it a go, it’s a gorgeous dress. I’ve made dresses and other things too which didn’t work out as I’d hoped but usually I manage to adjust them enough to find the result acceptable and most importantly, other people are often admiring the work and think it’s lovely!

Since you didn’t upload any pics of you wearing it I cannot judge it. On the dressform it looks fantastic and neatly done. Sometimes we are too harsh to ourselves – on the other hand you know your figure the best and know what suits you better. Don’t despair – if you are never to wear this dress again, regard this venture as a good lesson and experience. And I am sure that this would be a PERFECT gift to some of your friends if you are willing to part with it!
