Chiffon & Lace Project

I loved the flapper style dress on the cover of Burdastyle’s 6/2012 issue so I used it for my latest project. I used #116 view A. The lining was much too sheer and it’s really my fault for not using the recommended fabric so I still wore a slip under the underdress. The lace is easy to work with. The chiffon was not nearly the nightmare I anticipated.

I followed the instructions on how much fabric to get for this project and was left with way more than I needed. I probably could’ve gotten away with just a yard of chiffon and a yard of lace but oh well. I’ll find a way to use it for something else.

I love the airy, lightness of the whole dress. Summer here we come.

Material Notes

1.5 yard of chiffon, 1.5 yard lace, 1.5 yard lining. thread

I love this dress! I may try with silk chiffon. I also noticed you live in my town! Nice to know there are local sewing enthusiasts :)

Thank you! Yes, see how the silk chiffon works for you. I can’t wait to see your project. I picked this up at M&L fabrics in Buena Park off of Ball and Knott. I’m sure you’ve gone there. I think that’s awesome you’re a local.

After I got to looking at the instructions “again” I thought maybe they didn’t have them attached. I think I’ll do like you said and just put a little hand stitching in there. I sure hope mine turns out as well as yours did!

It’ll probably turn out even better. If anything confuses you just ask me. I’ll do my best to help out. I’ve lost many hours trying to figure some of the instructions to Burdastyle magazine’s patterns. Sometimes I just look for help on the internet. Lots of luck!

I’m only 5’ 1" and I know I’m going to have to shorten the pattern length! LOL I make clothing all the time, but the directions are throwing me a little on this for some reason. I’m going to make a muslin just in case I mess it up the first time since I’m unsure of how to assemble it. Where does the top lace garment attach to the underdress?

Oh you should have enough fabric then. Well the top lace is like a separate top that you put on as a layering piece over the underdress. You can probably attach it to the top of the underdress at the top of the shoulders. I probably should have done that because the first time I wore the dress I noticed it shifted a lot when I moved.

You can sew the lace top in place with little hand sewn stitches to the underdress shoulder seams so it won’t be seen.

Hope this helps and you are welcome!

I’m working on my pattern now. I’m trying to figure out if the lace is attached to the chiffon or is the chiffon attached to the underdress and the lace lays freely on top of it?

The chiffon is attached to the underdress and the lace top lays freely as a separate piece on top of it.

I hope you have had enough fabric because I was kind of worried when I posted how much I used because i’m a bit on the shorter side.

Your dress is beautiful! Thanks for the heads up on the fabric requirement. I just ordered 1.5 yards of each, which should be enough. I can’t wait to make this. It looks so soft and delicate. You did a great job with it!

The dress looks great! Is there any other fabric you might use with this pattern?

Thank you! The pattern recommends any lightweight softly draping fabrics. I think a lightweight cotton, or linen for the underdress could work but I would stick with the lace for the outer top and definitely the chiffon for the layer you attach the bottom portion of the underdress.
You’ll find this is an easy dress to make.

A lovely dress. I’m sure this will be a great asset in your wardrobe.

I always buy more fabric than i need. It always gets used in other projects or used for testing out ideas.
