Burda Style For people who sew

Before you think….wow her sewing has come along way in a year…my mum made this dress for me. Beautiful isn’t it! I loved the dress as soon as I saw the Duchess wear the Alexander McQueen gown to the BAFTA celebration in LA….and I thought it would be the perfect dress to wear to a ball that I had coming up.
The top layer is chiffon and the lining is a satin polyester. The lining is fitted to the waist and a-lines down to a skirt. To make the gathers, we made the chiffon top four times wider than the lining and then gathered it up. We made a seperate gathered skirt and joined the two together.
That seems simple enough to explain, but in reality it was hard to get the gathers to sit down and not balloon out but it was a super-star effort by my mum and it looked gorgeous.
The belt was going to be the tough part because to buy a diamonte belt cost a small fortune…until I remembered I had bought strands of beads for my bridesmaides that never got used. They alone had cost me $110 so I was glad 6 years later they were put to good use. That was my big imput into the outfit – I glued all the diamonte’s onto the belt !
