I was looking for a pattern for a basic pencil dress with no waist seam, and ended up using parts of this pattern with modifications. Turns out it was the right choice! It’s very well-drafted, with a great fit at the lower back created by the combination of back darts and a curved center back seam. For a pattern described as “tight-fitting” it has too much ease, but I guess I should have learned by now to trace one size smaller than the Burda size chart tells me to.

Nice. The curved top edge makes this really flattering.

Would anyone venture a guess if this could be made without the darts in the front? My middle is fuller due to surgery, but I love this dress. If made without the darts in front would it just hang straight like a shift?

I guess it would have a shift-type fit, with bust darts and slight shaping at the side seams. Are you worried about it hanging too straight? Because if you try it on and it’s boxy, it should be fairly easy to add very shallow darts where the original ones were removed.
