Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! I made a quilt. I made a QUILT!
This is my first quilt ever and I am so thrilled with it! What an achievement to start my year. :)
I’ve called it a cheat quilt because I did not do the traditional quilt “sandwich”. Instead I backed it with fleece and omitted batting. We don’t really need much warmth here in PNG unless you’re in the mountains, and the fleece makes it cuddly but not too hot.
It’s made using a layer cake (note to me: don’t throw away the label until you’ve written your post, or you won’t remember the name!) and a Kona solids jelly roll for the sashing strips. The layer cakes were made into Pinwheels using Missouri Quilt Co’s tutorial on easy pinwheels, but they used charm packs. The bias on a layer cake is much more pronounced, and this did create some problems. Joining the pinwheels made it seem too scrappy, so I added the sashing to make it look more sophisticated.
Instead of quilting or tying, I used buttons in the center of each pinwheel. Another cheat! LOL My final cheat was not binding it, but just sewing the fabric and fleece right sides together, then flipping it right-side out, allowing it to create a natural edging.
Apart from the buttons and the closure after turning that were done by hand, the entire quilt was completed on my serger.
Unfortunately this quilt was a trade (bartering is alive and well), so I don’t get to keep it. However, I learnt so much from this and had such fun. I feel so accomplished! Passing it on means I have an excuse to make another. I love giving. :D
Kona layer cake (forget the name), Kona jelly roll Solids Snow, cotton fleece, buttons.
