This is a great bag that can be made in 1-2 hours by an experienced seamstress.
It’s cute enough to splurge on some higher end fabric – finish the handle edges and use it as an everyday bag!

These bags remind me of bags I saw when I lived in Germany. They can hold a lot without being bulky. This seems like it would be a great recycling project.
