My new year’s resolution is to sew at least one item of clothing a month – and use up some of my massive fabric store. This is January.
I’ve been after a simple shift dress pattern for a while. They are so handy for work. I love this one from the August 2009 issues of the Burda magazine. It’s the simple plain top half and the gathered tulip style skirt.
The fabric was originally bought to be a shift dress, then I was looking at it possibly for a suit but I didn’t have enough material, so it was back to being a dress.
During this project I finally learned how to put an invisible zip in so that it looks pretty invisible. That and the more sewing I do, the neater things are starting to look. They’re still not perfect but they are all vast improvements on earlier projects.

That’s a good resolution, and executed so nicely! I, too, have a massive fabric hoard that needs to be thinned a bit. I plan on making this dress but I’m not sure about making it in grey.

Excellent dress! I’ve been trying to decide between this pattern & the other dress from that issue. Your version is great. Did you lengthen it? I thought it was for a petite, which is part of my hesitation (I am tall).

It’s a regular length pattern (I think it’s the suit that’s the petite), though I did add a couple of inches to the skirt length as I couldn’t see how long it was in the picture and I wanted it on the knee at least.
