I wanted a super simple jacket pattern to whip up a casual party jacket a few years ago. I found this pattern #109 in a December 2006 Burda that I had aquired from a friend. The jacket called for lining and I normally like to line my jackets but I decided to try a construction technique I have seen in store bought clothes and so finished the inside seams with bias tape. Although the pattern and construction was simple, I think the jackets works because of the material I chose. Upholstery fabric has great body and great design potential and also a contrasting (lining-like) color on the reverse side. For beginner sewers, I definitely recommend trying jacket patterns that omit collarbands and lapels and create the neck line with a simple collar (as also seen #127 Boxy Jacket May 2012).
