This retro style cardigan takes it’s cue from those pearl embroidered 50’s and 60’s cardigans that are really hard to find in vintage stores these days.
The pattern is a modified top pattern, see the diagram I provided on how to this. You can use the Lydia top pattern for this. I do it all the time with great result. The hem is done with invisible machine hem stitch and the neckline has self fabric binding.
Because it’s hard to sew buttonholes in delicate knits I used snaps instead, so the mother of pearl buttons are purely decorative.
Double faced wool jersey with white rayon backing. Pearl appliqués from the Scandinavia mail order store Stoff och stil. Mother of pearl buttons. Black metal snaps. Grosgrain ribbon for the inside of the button placket.
All those pearl embroidered vintage cardigans.

Very cute! I love the appliqués (and mother of pearl buttons, of course…!). Will for sure check out Stoff och Stil, had never heard of them, thanks for mentioning them :-)!

This is gorgeous! I am working on a cardigan made from jersey myself at the moment, it’s a good idea, fairly cheap and easy, with good results. Just curious, did you use a serger/overlocker to make this or a normal sewing machine? It looks incredibly professional.
