Carbon and paper system for tracing patterns to avoid cutting. I have vintage patterns that I don’t want to cut. It also works well for new patterns that you want to preserve the various sizes.
I put the pattern upside down so that when I trace it, the carbon is right side up. It works for tissue paper patterns as they are easy to see through.
