A darling candy colored house dress. Perfect for those unbearably hot days when the AC isn’t enough.
Pattern is McCall’s M5377.
This is a perfect example of how you should NOT simply follow the body measurements on the pattern envelope to decide on a size. See how much ease this dress has? The only place it is fitted is ABOVE the bust. I originally chose a size 16, because that is literally the size I should be according to my measurements. I figured out real quick that the top band was way too big! That band fit around my bosom, but hung around my armpits like a sack. So, I shaved the band (and the corresponding lining) down at the side seams to closer match the size 14. If I had followed my upper bust (under armpit) measurement, I would have chosen the sz 14 in the first place. Lesson learned.
Another lesson learned: be careful trimming seam allowances! I accidentally snipped through the face fabric twice, once on the bodice band and once on the bottom gathers. I fused and mended the bottom slash and it blends fine, but I had to go a bit further on the bodice, hence the super big purple rick rack. That was a happy accident because I think the rick rack really enhances the silliness of all the color.
Striped cotton gauze (Mood, NYC), white cotton batiste for the lining, and purple rick rack (Daytona Trim, NYC)

I love it! It totally looks like fun to wear – just what us girls need during summertime, something to feel carefree, comfortable & pretty in. And, it kinda reminds me of the little dresses I wore when I was a little girl in school – so, that’s an extra reason to make this a happy, happy, happy dress :)

Thank you! When I was a little girl anything with rainbows was perfect. This is exactly the kind of thing I would love way back then.
