A friend of a friend asked me to make her prom dress for her, and this is how it turned out!
She made some different style choices than I would have, but you have to work with what the client wants!!
She really wanted the sweetheart neckline on a corset-style bodice. I wanted a wrapped/ruched look in the top to cut down on the glare from the bright orange and blend better into the ruffles in the skirt.
The whole idea of having the sloping hemline also was so she could wear her favorite cowboy boots and show them off. When she found out that they wouldn’t be allowed to take their shoes off at the dance though, she opted for some lighter heels which were cute, but changed the whole look.
She also bought the flat-backed rhinestones, so I couldn’t sew them on. I ended up using a hot glue gun!
Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out. We got lots of stares and comments on how great she looked. The best part is that she loved it and had a great night at the dance!
Camo and Orange Satin, boning, rhinestones

How long did it take you to make this and how much was it?

I think the materials cost about $150, but I overestimated the amount of each satin I would need. It took me about 3 months, but I work and go to school also… If you had dedicated sewing time, I’m sure you could finish it way faster

I made my own pattern. The top is based on the “my purple corset” pattern here on Burdastyle, but basically with triangles added to the top to make the princess neckline.

This dress is absolutly BEAUTIFUL! I am looking for a camo dress for prom this year and am having no luck in finding a good one. Do you know if she would be willing to sell it? If not, would you be willing to make another and for how much if so?

Unfortunately I don’t have time to make another one. Like I said to Molly, the dress is somewhere around a US size 16, so if you are interested in buying it from her, I will ask her for you.

Do you know if she is looking to sell it? What size is it?

I don’t think she’s interested in selling… She’s about a US size 16 (it’s pinned pretty hardcore in that pic to keep it on the dress form). If you are interested, I will ask her.

That would be wonderful if you wouldn’t mind asking her. I absolutely love that dress and would do just about anything to have it for prom!! Thanks!!

Lovely details on the bustier. I also love a colour of the under skirt. You did an awesome job.

You did a really good job. It’s hard to make something that doesn’t fit with your idea of how it should look. The dress is very striking and your workmanship is beautiful so I’d say overall it is definitely a success!
