I fell in love with the Cable Car Tour Dress from Modcloth.com (last picture), but didn’t want to pay for it. So I made it!
I used the Madison pattern since it looked so similar, and I just modified the collar and added the buttons. I should have put a bit more interfacing in the back collar, as it doesn’t stand up quite so easily, but the front collar is stellar.
The pockets stick out a bit more than I like, but it doesn’t bug me too much. I added the belt, since the dress ended just a tad too big. Can’t tell anymore!

Just cotton, in a houndstooth pattern. Not the best quality, especially for a dress, but i was going for the “Look, I’m saving money” angle with this project. It actually turned out pretty good, as the body in it looks good in this pattern.
Modcloth dress: $50.
Mine: $20. And more than a few hours.
