One of my friends got married today! When we got their save the date card back in January, I naturally started thinking about making something to wear. I’d had the Decades of Style 1930s Butterfly Blouse pattern for awhile, waiting for a reason to be made, and this turned out to be the reason!
I found this beautiful but very pricey red silk at the Tessuti post-Christmas sale. It then sat in the fabric dresser for months until it became obvious I’d have to get over my terror of cutting such expensive fabric if I wanted an outfit in time for the wedding. It was terrifying to cut and sew, but I LOVE the end result. Those sleeves are gorgeous! They flutter around and they’re just so PRETTY! I changed the construction slightly to make the sewing easier, since it was such a slidey fabric, and I did a rolled hem around all raw edges instead of the French binding the instructions said to use.
A top is not an entire outfit, so I also needed a skirt to wear with it. I thought of a tulip-style skirt, and downloaded the Marie skirt pattern from Burda. I made that using a purple polyester shantung, and unfortunately the pleats were VERY stiff in it and I was very unhappy with the way it sat. I don’t need help making my butt look big! I took apart the back of the skirt, and sewed a new seam so it would be more of a pencil skirt at the back. I then realised I couldn’t walk or sit down in how narrow that made the hem, so I improvised a split in the back seam. I also tacked down the front pleats so they wouldn’t stick out so much either, and I’m much happier with it now.
It was a lovely day and a lovely wedding! Photos are taken in the chapel garden, by pambox as always.
