Description

Well, this dress is the result of Gertie’s Bombshell Sewing Course, which I signed up for with the very vague hope that it would help me end up with a wearable dress. I’m a busty gal, see, and fitting a dress like this is a nightmare. This is the end result of my trial dress. If it worked well enough to end up with something remotely wearable, then it would be worth making up a few more versions.

It’s a labour-intensive bodice with underlining, shaped cups and a boned lining. Some detailed pictures are here

It was a long arduous journey! You can follow the project on my blog with the following posts:

The First Muslin
The Third Muslin
The Make-Me-Cry Version
Test Run

And the final result, which is wearable, although not yet perfect…. I’m saving perfection for my next versions!

Material Notes

fashion fabric, lining, felt (or needlepunch or thin batting), boning (I used spiral steel bones), petersham (grosgrain), a zipper

Now this is a bombshell in a HOT dress! The Pattern for 122B only goes to size 36-44. Do you think it can be enlarged to fit size 48? Can you please advise if the pattern has allowed for seam allowance? Thank you so much!

Actually, in Burda 7/2011 the plus patterns have the exact same dress without the skirt variation. I actually traced off the size 44 from the plus to see if the cups had more coverage than the original pattern, but they were the same. The pattern goes up to 52!

Impressive! I didn’t care that much for Gertie’s version but yours really does look like a ‘bombshell’….

you are my hero! I have been struggling with this course for months! im also very busty – cannot buy store bought anything thats fitted – so i have really been relying on this course to teach me how to make the proper adjustments. I get the crying – had several of those myself! it can be so frustrating! Ive done four mockups so far, and all fell flat. Yours turned out so gorgeous it gives me hope that mine might turn out after all!

I totally feel your pain! Keep trying, and keep Gertie’s comment in mind: don’t over fit. I know this is difficult when you’re busty, but I just had to roll with it in the end. I found once the cups fit well, I still needed extra boning and the underwire if I was going to wear this without an undergarment. Good luck to you, and I look forward to seeing your dress!

Wow, it’s just gorgeous! Probably my favorite version of this dress that I’ve seen. I don’t know if that’s because the shape of the bodice is so much more flattering on a busty girl, or because it reminds me of something Christina Hendricks should wear on the red carpet…

Wow, wow, wow! I’m also busy with Gertie’s course, and I just hope that my dress turns out as well as yours! I think your fit is almost perfect – choose a wild fabric and make your final version!

Wow, I am very impressed. I just read your blog posts. Being busty myself makes me appreciate your fit challenges and I think you did a great job with this dress. Cheers for you for not abandoning the project!

Thanks! Being busty is a big fitting challenge – some projects (like this one) almost made me cry! But it was fun, and I’m glad I cracked the back of it, so to speak!
