Description

Shorts with deep front pleats and side pocket. I love how comfortable these are and the pleats makes them almost look like a mini skirt! The side pockets are a welcome addition and I appreciate that the waist hits a bit lower (around the belly button for me).

They do run a bit wide in the legs, I personally like it, but if that’s not your thing, you might consider alter them/make the pleat smaller.

My only gripe with this pattern are that side pockets gets stuck in the pleats, this making the pleats pop out and also creates some creases in the front. But I rather have pockets than not, and it’s not something I think about when wearing the shorts.

I do think the right fabric choice is very important for the success of these shorts. A stiffer/heavier fabric (like twill) wouldn’t probably work for instance, making the pleats stand out and make the shorts look really wide. And too light a fabric will probably make the pleats look shapeless and perhaps a bit wrinkly.

I used an cotton African wax print, that I think had a great weight for these shorts (not too flimsy, not too thick)

Burdastyle labels pattern this novice, but I would rather call it an intermediate pattern.

I also opted for a button fly instead of a zipper on these shorts.

Tutorial: How to make a button fly front

To sum it up. Great shorts with an interesting design!

Thank you! Cool to hear that your experience with wax cloth is great, I think it’s an underappreciated fabric for garments. So many beautiful prints!
