Wellington, New ...
A variation on the Amelia top, which is itself a variation of the Elizabeth dress bodice in the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book.
Due to lifestyle needs (aka a small baby) I decided to take the cute 1930’s inspired Amelia top from the BurdaStyle Vintage Modern book and turn it into a button-front shirt. I kept most of the details of the Amelia top (including the shaped yoke and the cap sleeves, which are the two elements that attracted me to the top in the first place) and simply made two adjustments to the pattern.
There are five buttons, in two different styles alternating down the front of the shirt to add a bit of fun and modernity. I faced the button turnings with a strip of the floral lawn, for a touch of fun and prettiness on the inside.
Cottons were changed out to match the colour of the fabric, so that stitching is as invisible as possible.
The seam allowance for the yoke was pressed downwards towards the hem and top-stitched in place, so that it stays flat and that the darker brown fabric won’t show through the lighter lawn.
The hem and armholes are simply turned under and stitched, to make it easy to take in at the side seams in the future (since I’m still working on losing baby weight!).
(Note: the ties do hang down, but it was a bit windy when the photos were being taken!)
The result – a reasonably fitted style, with a tie neckline, cap sleeves, five buttons up the front, dart fitting, and good for wearing with wide-legged trousers or skirts. It’s got a “vintage” touch through the design lines and the length, and also the use of a vintage floral cotton lawn. But it’s also kept modern through contrast fabric and buttons, and a heavier cotton drill for the lower half.

The top half is in a white cotton lawn with pink floral design and small pink hearts. The bottom half is a cotton drill.
