This project has been a wonderful opportunity to play around with patterns and vintage styling from the new BurdaStyle book. My designs are inspired by the flirty, full-skirted styles of the 1950’s sundress. Using bias stripes, contrasting fabrics, and incorporating true vintage details like adorable pockets and a fabric covered belt create an authentic vintage look. Adding modern details like an invisible zipper, a shorter skirt length, and easy-to-wear fabric gives this vintage inspired dress all the modern necessities.
Working at an amazing fabric shop, Selvedge Studio in Missoula Montana, and being a student of Costume Design at the University of Montana, makes it easy for me to incorporate vintage inspired pieces I’ve made into my everyday wardrobe. I grew up sewing and have been working at Selvedge for three years, helping people pick out fabric and teaching sewing classes. My obsession with all things vintage (from clothes, to hair, to martinis) has grown with my skills in sewing and costume design. Although my major is in Marketing from the School of Business Administration, I spend most of my time on my minor in Theatre and Costume Design.
Thank you for inspiring my creativity, and congratulations on the release of the new book!
Best regards,
Gwen Mann, and Selvedge Studio
