I made this double breasted jacket from red corduroy. It is based on the Frank Button Down Shirt from the BurdaStyle Vintage Modern book. In many ways it was a bringing together of almost all I have learnt in my first few months of sewing. I didn’t note down the exact pattern variation measurements but I will explain what I did as far as possible in case anybody would like to try something similar. I’ve marked it down as for men but I’m sure with slightly different tailoring it could fit a lady perfectly.
The jacket has a v-shaped back yoke, interfaced collar and cuffs, is lined and can be worn either with all the buttons done up or with one undone and the flaps folded down. The cuffs have a decorative piece with a blue button. The visible thread and front buttons are blue as well to give a nice colour contrast to the red. My main inspiration was a classic double breasted pea-coat. I was also thinking of the Victorian Redcoats and the jackets the Beatles wore on Sgt. Pepper. I wanted a more modern, casual look and slim cut, and a medium weight, so I used the bright red cord and modified a Burda shirt pattern. My personal twist is that the front flaps (and buttons) taper so they are at an angle. Oh, in the first two pictures the hem is slightly folded over. This is just because I didn’t straighten it out properly before having my photo taken. Oops!
The main fabric is a medium weight red corduroy. Any medium to heavy cotton or wool would work, I think. It is lined with a fine cotton. I also used heavy weight interfacing (iron on) for the cuffs and collar and light weight interfacing for the outer flap.
