Lately, I have been wanting to experiment and push myself in terms of creating some interesting looks. I have been inspired by the laser cut lace style dresses that have been around for the past year or so and thought that I would do my own version of it. So when I saw the Jamie Shift Dress pattern, I knew that it would be perfect fot this lace cut technique.
1. The first step was to cut out the shift dress pattern with tulle.
2. Designed and adapted a jacquard style pattern for this particular dress.
3. Created a stencil and traced the pattern onto the black fabric
4. Carefully cut out the jacquard pattern and sewed the darts on both fabrics (tulle & black fabric)
5. After it was all cut out, I matched the darts on the tulle and black then pinned it all.
6. Sewed the cut out piece onto the tulle. That is the front section done.
7. The back is an inverted version of the front, so I arranged the cut out pieces on the back tulle piece.
8. Pinned and sewed the back pieces on.
9. Sewed front and back pieces together and finished edges (e.g. neckline)
10. Utilised the Jamie Shift Dress pattern to make the under garment with a soft coloured chiffon
11. Photo taking time! Luckily it had snowed lightly the other day, so we thought that it would be a good idea to bear the cold and take photos amongst the white surroundings! Unfortunately I couldn’t get our usual images from film ready in time, so we had to rely on the few digital images that we had taken. The film one’s will hopefully be ready soon:) Fickle Sense

LOVE the cutout/lace work.
Two questions:
1. what type of fabric is the black? 2. did you hand or machine stitch the black to the tulle?

I bought the black a while ago at a market, so I am not exactly sure what they called the fabric…. but it seems as though it is a woven fabric, made out of synthetic fibers. It is medium to light weight and I knew that it would do the job for this project as it does not fray a great deal. So I would be searching for a fabric which does not fray. I will be writing about this on my blog within the coming days, so you can find more info on my blog www.fickelsense.com if you are interested:)
Regarding sewing it. I started to sew it with my machine, then decided that some parts needed to be hand sewn. The hand sewing was not working out too well, so I went back to sewing on my machine. So the whole thing is pretty much machine stitched.
Thanks for the questions and feedback:)

I didn’t see this project until the finalists were announced. It’s a great dress, so creative and flawlessly put together! I’m not usually a fan of shift dresses, but this one is absolutely stunning! Need I say you get my vote? I think you, out of all the talented people in the finale, really deserve to win – if only to create stunning and inspiring pieces for the rest of us to see! Well done and good luck!

This is so very amazing. Congratulations. May I ask what your stencil is made out of?

Hi, the black fabric is a woven blend, so it does not fray much. The initial stencil is a water proof tracing paper. I hope this answers your question. Thanks!

Absolutely fantastic!! Perfect dress and terrific presentation with a snowy trees background. Just a piece of art. Bravo! I can’t imagine how you sewed the cut out pieces on the tulle.. that must be a hard work.. And I didn’t get it: you sewed the darts on the black fabric after jacquard pattern has been cut out?

Feb 18, 2013, 07.12 PMby mahaila
The darts were a good reference point, I sewed the darts on the black and I sewed the tulle darts. So I had the 2 separate fabrics. I then matched them up and sewed the black onto the tulle so that the design sat right. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the positive feedback!
