Description
Lately I have been obsessed with the shows Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire and have been wanting to make a fun, 1920’s flapper-inspired dress. I thought this challenge was perfect for me to do just that. So here is my version of the modern day flapper dress. I used the Jamie Shift Dress Pattern from the Burdastyle Vintage Modern book. This book was so helpful and had lots of great styling tips for the 1920’s. To make the dress, I used a beautifully embellished mesh material. The dress is also lined with a formal wear satin-type of lining. I used an invisible zipper along the side and not on the back as the pattern suggested because I did not want to lose any of the detailing along the back. Also the hem line is slightly longer and rounded in the back and higher in the front. For the neckline, I added ½” bias binding and I just love how it came out. I think it gives the dress a nice little touch. And of course, to give the dress that flapper vibe, I added fringe along the bottom. Not only did it give the dress some length but it added some movement and personality to the dress as well. Overall, I am really happy with the dress. I have never worked with this material or fringe before, and although it was a challenge sometimes, I would say this was a pretty simple and fun dress to make and I am very happy with the end result.

Love the fabric, but the fringe doesn’t really add to the dress in my opinion. But well done anyway. Your work looks very finely finished.

Hi Sandia, you should do audition in this: even as a walk-on all ladies Crawley would have a problem! Voted your dress, because of the perfect picture. Like the length of the fringe and all the rest, envy your sewing. Keep the necklace and feathers, good luck and thanks for good inspiration!!

Very nice, the color looks great on you and I like the way you styled the dress. Good choice on the fringe it really gives it a fun flair. Kind of random but I love how you sewed your lining to your zipper it is very even and smooth, did you do it by machien or by hand? Very well done :)

Thanks! I machine sewed the zipper in. There are probably better ways to do it but I sewed the zipper to the outer fabric first and then I sewed the lining.

I have done that a few times myself but I find that more often than not I have to hand sew it and I hate hand sewing it, lol! Your’s turned out very nicely :)
