I decided to make an outfit with blouse #137 from the March 2013 issue of BS and skirt #133 from the Feb 2013 issue. I made quite a bit of small changes though…
-I didn’t have lace but was looking for a way to use up some leftover border print fabric, and I thought that the blouse would be perfect. So no lace for me. I also removed the collar and the buttons on the back.
-I don’t know how to make the “V” part look nice and flat – i also have this problem when I try to add bias tape edge to a sharp V – it becomes very bunched up and not crisp looking. Anybody have ideas on the proper way of working with Vs? Should I be notching/trimming/etc something? If you know of a good pattern where I can learn how to do this, please do let me know! (i added a photo to show what i mean)
-I didn’t have enough fabric for the skirt so I shortened it and left the back unpleated.
-I also am in a “i only feel like wearing skirts with elastic” phase in my life so I used elastic in the back of the skirt and left it out in the front as to avoid having pleats clash with gathers. Also if anybody knows of a good tutorial of only having a a waistband be 1/2 elastic… please let me know as I kind of haphazardy guessed at how to do it. It works, it looks fine, but I’m sure there’s a better technique elsewhere.(I just made a waistband, put the elastic in, marked where my sides were and stitched the ends of the elastic into place at the sides.)
-Since I can’t find very wide elastic here (maximum 1" here) I made the waist band narrower – thus making the belt narrower as well. Doesn’t bother me and I still like it.
-I used my pocket pattern piece from the Colette Hazel as it is roomier and it has become my favorite pocket size.
-Added a bias tape hem, but since the fabric is stiffer the pleats don’t look as nice at the hem. Noted for future projects.
The best part is that I can wear these 2 together as a dress… or separate with other tops and other bottoms!
