My finished coat from the Pattern~Scissors~Cloth Ready-To-Wear Tailoring Sew-Along hosted by Sherry. I was inspired by a trench coat in a Burberry advertisement featuring Emma Watson. I took a pattern from my stash, vintage Simplicity 6976, for the basic shape and then began to draft the changes that I wanted. I added a collar with collar stand, storm flaps, pleats at the shoulder, six rows of buttons, and a belt. I used a camel-colored gabardine for the outer and a Burberry rainwear for the lining.

You are too modest in rating your sewing level…definitely not a novice!

Thank you! That means a lot coming from a recently featured member. I’m also in the Bay Area, so you caught my attention. You’ve done some really fun and creative projects.

aww you make me blush! good to “meet” other sewers in the bay area. i was trying to get an east bay burdastyle/sewing group together with another member, but we’ll see how it goes…

How would one organize a BurdaStyle sewing group? Is there a place to sign up? I’m just outside the city down the peninsula, but I could easily make the drive to the east bay if I were aware of a gathering.

so here’s the meetup page: http://www.meetup.com/BurdaStyle/Oakland-CA/-1/
we kinda ran out of steam because we don’t have a place to meet yet (my apt is teeny tiny). but if you “sign up” for the group it will send you any updates. :)

This is great! It really does look professional and I also love that white dress. I have some Barberry gabardine and raincoat material, but not lining… where did you find the lining?

Thanks! I found the lining at a store in San Francisco called Discount Fabrics. I try to link to my fabric sources here if they have an online source, but I don’t think this store does. It’s a warehouse filled with what I imagine are bolts of fabric that major sources no longer need. About a year ago I happened upon a bin of fabrics labeled Burberry on super sale. I grabbed up the rest of the bolt of this Burberry, but I’ve used it for everything so I’m now down to a yard or so left. I guess that shows how much I love it!

Very nice job! I own a Burberry trench so I can tell you firs hand, this could pass for the real one! I love the white dress you wear under it! Is that made by you also?

Thanks! And, no, I didn’t make the white dress. It was a gift from my friends for my bachelorette party from Express.

Thank you so much! I’m happy with how well it came out. It’s my first real attempt at drafting this much.

Ha! Since I used real Burberry fabric for the lining, I hope they’ll think of me as a walking advertisement for them… Wishful thinking?!

wow, so perfect! I love that coat in the Emma Watson commercial too – and I was thinking about making my own trench too, but when I see your version, I give up! :)
