We asked and you answered: What should we make for Halloween? Thanks to BurdaSyle member ApplesofAvalon for commenting and recommending the idea of a fairy take heroine in this blog post!
La Belle au bois Dormant, the famous French fairytale by Charles Perrault, was made into a Disney animated picture in 1959, illustrating the story of princess Aurora, or Sleeping Beauty. To sum up the story, a curse is put on princess Aurora and she is forced to go into hiding, and during this time becomes Briar Rose, living in a woodland cottage with the animals.
The final image is where we pulled the look from. A dirndl pattern was the perfect template for this project— and to make things even easier we simplified it: We left out the apron, left out the trimming on the hem, and left out the ruffle on the top bodice. For the bodice we used black velvet and for the skirt we used light blue silk to emulate Briar Rose’s outfit. Underneath, the Susan blouse, with it’s wide sleeves and pretty detailing, was perfect for the undershirt.
Bodice: Cotton velvet, 150 cm (59 in) wide, for the bodice: 0.60 m (3/4 yd) for all sizes.
Skirt: Silk, 150 cm (59 in) wide, for the skirt: 2.00 m (2 1/4 yds). Batiste, 140 cm (55 in) wide, as lining for bodice: 0.70 m (7/8 yd).

It’s supercute, looks great on you! Me personally, I’ll probably dress in some sort of ridiculous outfit, like a toothbrush or robot or something like that. I always fear that if I wear a pretty outfit like this people wonder whether I have actually dressed up or normally walk around in outfits like this. But that is also because there is not such a big tradition for Halloween over here.

Oh-la-la, now those costumes in that film are amazing! Funny how ‘Peau d’ane’ sounds so much nicer than ‘Donkey Skin’!
