Description

Bow Ties for the American Cancer Society Pink & Black Bow Tie Gala. The ties were a lot of fun, especially once I actually got to tie one into a bow. I had to consult two diagrams and four videos, but I finally got it! The video that finally got through to me was on VideoJug, a demonstration by an Englishman on Savile Row (or something like that). The most difficult part about this project was turning the ties right side out after stitching. The heavier fabrics were a terrible struggle, and the very delicate ones couldn’t survive the turning. I actually had to throw away 4 ties due to these problems. I’m also worried that these ties are not long enough to fit very many people. Oh well, time’s a running out, so I’ll know better next year.

Material Notes

Cotton; Poly Satin; Raw Silk; Crepe & Lace; Flannel; Poly Blends.

I love the fabric you used for the ties. My favourite is the soft pink one with the lacy texture! And I admire your effort for such a great cause!

Oh, the bow ties are not as difficult to make as it sounds! It’s just that this was my first time at it, and I had some lessons to learn about the process and how certain fabrics act under the conditions. The instructions call for taffeta, but I experimented with all kinds of fabric like laces, flannels, organza, etc. Some were a success and some were not, but I enjoyed the process. I just felt it best to share my “trials & errors” with the members in hopes of helping someone else avoid my mistakes. That’s sort of what this website is all about:) Anyway, I know I’ll be making more because once my husband saw all the bow ties, he put his order in for some in special fabrics! Also, I will absolutely participate in the American Cancer Society fund raiser if they have it next year (I’ll just make sure to procure my sliders ahead of time:)

Gods, they sound like a right pain in the arse to make! Still, they look gorgeous, and very admirable. Those lace ones are lovely~
