Many of us loved the long sleeved maxi dress from a recent post I did on 7 Ways to Wear Green—so I had to make this dress and see the outcome on my own. I plan to wear this dress to a wedding in the summer, it would also suit a bohemian bride as a gown!
I adore the cocoon-like shape of the skirt, the full skirt curves in towards the ankle, making a what could be retro silhouette modern. It would look nice in a print yet the style lines are interesting enough in a solid color. I did an invisible bias tape hem at the bottom and sleeves.
This is my final project as BurdaStyle’s Creative Director and Editor, please see my farewell post here!

I’m starting this dress soon and I can’t tell what to do with the hem facing. Should it be cut from fusible interfacing and ironed onto the hem’s WS? Should it be cut from dress fabric and sewn in as a false hem?

Gorgeous dress! And the pattern is amazing, it would also be perfect for maternity wear, I will probably make one for my baby shower.

So beautiful, you did a fabulous job! I would recommend that you not wear this to a wedding though! I’m getting married this summer and if one of my guests showed up in that dress, I would be so mad!!! You look might look better than the bride! :)

i love it, i wish it had a high slit, and was a bit more fitted.

so pretty! this would make an amazing wedding gown with knee length bridesmaids dresses!

Lovely design but poor fit. The fitting needs fine tuning i.e. on shoulders and back perhaps a smaller size on the top. Would be gorgeous in a fine wool jersey or other good stretch material. Also would tweak the neckline and fit it flatter to the body.

I haven’t been able to figure it out. I downloaded that PDF Creator software several times, and it put some strange toolbar on my browser, but I was still unable to download the pattern.

Alison, Please re-post this in a PDF file format. That way, both Microsoft and Apple operating systems can download and open (and print) the file. We hate to miss out on your pretty dress! Thanks, Terry

I spent too much time downloading and installing the FoxTab PDF converter, multiple times, but I still don’t see a link to download the pattern. Just a link to download the FoxTab PDF converter.

I wish I could download the pattern, but the file is not supportive of my Mac 10.4. Any suggestions? Thanks, it is a beautiful dress.

I have no suggestions but, where do you actually get the download? I just don’t see it anywhere!

It’s not working in Internet Explorer 8 or Chrome, either, so I don’t think you’re missing anything.

This is the best maxi dress I’ve ever seen. Most of them lack this amount of design/style. You went out with a bang!

It looks really stylish, I especially loved it in the magazine in green. I wonder how it would come out in a knee length version? might try it myself. :-)

Knee length would be super cute! I would make sure that the hem tapers in the same way the maxi version does at the hem, to get the cocoon shape.
Jan 30, 2012, 06.09 PMby postmodest
oh yes! I immediately thought about shorter version too!
I was very much in love with Bodkin Baobab Dress mainly because of its ‘bottle shape’, but wasn’t sure about the unfitted top – if you have bust, you probably know the problem with loose dresses looking like pregnancy garments. This burda pattern solves all of my problems! Oh and it’s long-sleeved. Love. I definitely will give it a try.

Excellent, glad it would work cos I love the design but know I wouldn’t have many places I could wear a full length version to :-)
