This is my first foray into making a dress without a purchased pattern. Instead, I used the “block” method to make my own pattern for the bodice, according to the process explained in the “Constructing the Basic Bodice Block” technique posted here on Burda Style.
I haphazardly drew the scooped back and round neckline freehand and it turned out pretty well. The one problem is that I neglected to take my bust measurement because I thought I knew it, but I forgot that I had lost weight since I last measured myself, so It wound up being a little too big in the bust, which I didn’t dare try to fix because everything else about it fit me so well – it would have fit me just perfectly if I hadn’t been neglectful in that one respect! The skirt is just a gathered skirt made of three rectangles sewn together and gathered into the waist.
The fabric is a set of curtains I got at a thrift store and I just finished the hem with bias tape out of laziness, but I think the red border is a nice touch, especially combined with the red accessories! I will definitely be adjusting my bodice block and using it to make more things from “scratch” as well as adjust the patterns I buy to fit me better!
