This dress was inspired by a dress I saw on modcloth in navy with a white lace collar. Sadly the shipping to NZ for modcloth anything makes me feel a bit faint, so what’s a girl to do? Well, head down to your local fabric store, find some fabric and make it my way!
I picked a chiffon because I wanted something floaty. And I was so happy when I found some fabric in the exact same colour as the chiffon. The only problem was it was a knit, and in a state of learner cluelessness didn’t think sewing a stretchy fabric to one with no stretch at all wasn’t going to be a problem. Unsurprisingly I needed help (again, surprise surprise) from my Mum. She always ends up giving me a hand somehow in my projects… thanks Mum!
Mum had a big hand in making this dress actually, she made the pattern for me (A basic slip underneath and an A-line top layer with elastic sewn into the chiffon around the natural waist, and cap sleeves). and watched me carefully as I had a go. She’s a pattern-maker by trade, so I grew up spoiled.
I adore this dress, it’s comfy and I feel so pretty in it. And I can dress it up or down really easily. In a perfect world my wardrobe would consist of several of variations of this dress. I should get started on that really… it’s my ‘go to’ dress on the days when I have no idea what to wear.
Chiffon on the top layer and a knit underneath. Some black lace (to trim off the neckline and sleeves) and elastic.

Haha yes I’m a Wellington girl! Windy day today but I just couldn’t wait to get pictures. The belt was a $3.50 find from savemart – love it!
