When my sister and I were little, every year my mother would make a brand new Easter dress for herself, my sister and me. I challenged myself this year to make my own dress for Easter. Very soon after that decision, I fell in love with some light blue lace fabric and found a wonderful and seemingly simple vintage dress pattern Etsy. It was perfect!
The whole dress came together in about a week’s time. I had a lot of trouble with the bodice because – although the pattern professed to be my exact waist and bust measurements – the bust ended up being way too huge. I ended up taking it in a lot on the sides, adding a seam down the back, and trimming a lot of fabric away from the arm holes so that I could still fit my arms through it. I’m not completely satisfied with the fit, but it’s as close as it’s getting! This was my first experience with bias binding, and boy do I need more practice. I machine-stitched it on the outside and hand-stitched it to the inside. One other change I made was to only use two panels in the skirt rather than three, since I didn’t have enough material.
I had stopped to look at that blue lace half a dozen times at the fabric store. It was $2 a yard, I don’t know why I ever hesitated in the first place!
I found light blue cotton lining and bias binding tape to match.

The lace really sets the 50’s theme of the dress off. It’s beautiful and the fit looks good on you!

Adorable dress! I used to have something very similar only in pink lace, when I was little. Love love love the vintage feel of the photos! And I, personally, don’t see anything wrong with the fit!

I love this dress. You did a great job. My mother used to make us all matching outfits, too, and since I was the younger sister, I also wore the hand-me-downs. I didn’t really appreciate all the effort she put into it.

Gorgeous! And lovely pictures! The fit doesn’t look too bad, I would say, but knowing how obsessed I am with fit myself, I guess you’d be the one to decide ;)

It’s gorgeous- well done! I’ve been looking at a couple of vintage reproduction patterns and I think you’ve inspired me to take the plunge.
Your styling and photography is fantastic- you must have a willing helper there :-)

I love the dress! I love the vintage style and the final result! It looks great on you. Sorry to hear it gave you so much trouble! Where did you get those gloves, veil, suitcase, shoes…? They are very nostalgic and pretty…! BTW I keep my cats out of the sewing room – they eat threads and sit on pins and cause general havoc.

Thank you!
The gloves and suitcase were from a thrift shop, veil (and hat) from Etsy.com, and the shoes from JCPenney :)

Beautiful! – I so want a lace dress. Great job. In regards to the bias tape – I have a bias foot for my machine but have not yet used it. There is video of it in use at this site www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk/sewing…/bias-binder.html – This may be of use to you in future.

Thanks!
Yeah, I figured Bob the cat causes enough trouble while I’m trying to sew, he should at least pose for pictures!
