Burda Style For people who sew

I made this dress for my sister’s 11th birthday, in 2009. Her birthday is June 23rd, so I wanted to make something so could play in outside without burning to death. I made the hem much shorter than floor-length, and I made short sleeves.
I lined the sleeves with fabric wrong sides together, so the shiny part of the satin would stick out of the facing-holes. The main fabric was really thin, so I lined the body with a shorter under-layer. I was working on a deadline for her birthday, so instead of hemming the semicircular bottom edge (which takes forever) I finished it with double fold bias tape. For the back opening, I made a modesty panel of satin and stitched it to the dress, and then sewed grommet tape to the inside of the top layer to make a place to lace it up with cording. As decorative touches, I embroidered vines around the neck edge and sewed seed beads on to the sleeves around the facings.
I also made detachable long sleeves for this dress, so she could wear it to play in when it was cooler. I drafted these sleeves myself, and lined them fully. I sewed hook and eyes to the inside of the dress sleeves and to the outside of the detachable sleeves, so you could hook them on or off.

4 1/2 yards blue cotton, 1 1/2 yards coral satin, 5 yards light red bias tape, 1/2 yard interfacing, 1 1/4 yards of grommet tape, 2 yards blue-green satin cording, embroidery floss, seed beads, thread.
