Blue Birds

Added Aug 22, 2010

by nookie

Kelvin Grove, Au...

My first ever knit dress made by combining three patterns (bodice, sleeves, skirt) and adding a few extra bits of my own. Because I wasn’t sure of the fit I decided to use a basting stitch before getting out the overlocker. As a result the sewing process went smoothly and I ended up with a garment I love and enjoyed making (as opposed to my “knit nightmare”). As the blue was very blue and I don’t tend to wear all solid colours I added a little bird trim and made a sash to go with it.

Material Notes

Some kind of acrylic blend for the knit and spotlight cotton fat quarter.

Thanks. I really should update my studio. I have made a tonne of things and should document them now I have a decent camera and my own computer.

Really beautiful! I love the detailing on the bodice, and the drape of the sleeves is perfect. Nice work!

this is so cute. it looks fantastic on u and the trimming is so fun and gives it alot of personality! im curious, do u use a stretch overlocker? or does it work with a normal one?! thank you :)

I use a janome overlocker that can be used for stretch and woven. For the hems and neckline I use my normal sewing machine, often with the twin needles.

Your dress is lovely! I love the trim/border/strip you added to accentuate the front in a bib-like way and the sash is a great detail! Great job!
