Birthday Maisy dress
Added Apr 7, 2013
Little Bub is going through a Maisy Mouse fad that I’m not doing much to discourage since Maisy seems innocuous enough (it could be much worse – like Bratz dolls! Teletubbies! shudder…).
I wanted to surprise her with a Maisy dress for her birthday, so I tried to rustle up some fabric. Unfortunately all that’s on the market is Japanese cotton-canvas stuff, and while there is a pretty wide range of super adorable prints, the weight is really more suited to bags or upholstery, both of which a small girl has little use for.
So against my better instincts, I made the soft canvas into a dress. The design is simple enough, I just left off the collar and sleeves, and gathered the skirt into the bodice all around instead of doing pleats. There wasn’t nearly enough fabric (ok I was a big cheapskate – but oh my it was expensive!), so I made a little ruffled hem to add some length.
It didn’t turn out perfect, and the bodice seams don’t match exactly at the front, but the Little Bub was pleased as pleased, and it is such a cheerful colour! The other mums at her Sunday School class like it too, and I didn’t tell them it was made from cushion-cover fabric :)
cotton-canvas, medium weight (NOT advisable really!)
