BERNINA 3 Series - The Atomic Dress

Added Nov 19, 2010

by analogue

Wonderland, Unit...

The inspiration for my party outfit came from the 1950s. The 50s symbolise a time of prosperity and innovation for me, a vision of a bright new future after the horrors of two world wars. My Atomic dress is inspired by a 50s original and made in black satin and white ribbon with a concealed zipper at the side. It is fully lined and has a petticoat to give the skirt fullness. No party getup of mine is complete without a hat so I designed and made one to match the dress – I call it my Starburst hat, in line with the 50s theme. The faux pearl necklace is also designed and made by me.

Material Notes

black satin, lining fabric, petticoat fabric, white ribbon / rick-rack, concealed zip

Garment Type
Classic, Evening Wear, Other, Vintage

Thank you so much! You’ll be amazed at the things you can make yourself with some practice. There are some great resources on this website to help you as well. I myself was taught the basics by my grandmother but am mainly self-taught & I’m glad I stuck with it. Have fun learning to sew & I’m looking forward to seeing your projects once you’re ready to upload something :)

thanks! I love hats but have no experience making them at all so it’s just improvised. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I am so excited about your dress! I have a question about … Do you have the split skirt several times, the series or is it all uncut? do you understand my question? my english is not so good.

Thank you so much for the compliment! I’m not sure I understand your question right, but the skirt is made out of two large pieces of fabric cut on the bias, with seams at the sides. I hope that’s the answer you’re looking for.

      I think so! thanks!
if I understood correctly, rickrack is only decoration which is sewn up on it?
the dress is truly a masterpiece and in the style of the Dior New Look 1947!

Yes, That’s the only decoration, I thought by keeping the dress simple it would be more striking. I’m really flattered by your compliments, you make me blush :)

      One last question, ok?
did you even constructed? or where did you get the pattern?

    • Avawa_large

      Nov 19, 2010, 05.11 PMby analogue

I used a pattern from the 50s as inspiration but made some changes to make this dress
