"BERNINA 3 series" 50's party frock

Added Nov 22, 2010

South Bend, Indi...

A semi-formal frock inspired by the pastel confections of the 1950’s. The strapless dress, in a sweet seafoam color, has a lightly boned bodice, and features a tucked chiffon inset, vintage lace overlay, ruched mesh, gathered tulle edging and sprinkles of Swarovski crystals. I added a removable shoulder strap, covered in silk gardenias, for a corsage look. The skirt has a matching satin lining, and 12 yards of gathered tulle. Another sprinkling of crystals around the skirt gives it sparkle-perfect for twirling on the dance floor! I was struck by the variety of bodice treatments in dresses from this time period, whether they were manufactured for retail sale, or made at home. Even though the silhouette is basically the same for most of them-strapless bodice, with full tulle skirt- the manipulation of embellishments and the sheer creativity is awe inspiring. Sadly, my daughter did not get home in time for the holiday break to model this for me. I even painted a pair of pumps to match the dress! I will add a photo of her wearing it, after the weekend….

This looks exactly like a dress my mother had – she saved it and let me play dress-up it it when I was a little girl. It is lovely!
