Ouidah, Benin

Sorry this isn’t a garment.. but I had to post it as it is made up of every single garment that I’ve posted on BurdaStyle so far. I saved scraps from everything I made for year to be able to make this quilt.

Here it is! All finished – a quilt made up of all the leftover scraps from a year spent in Benin. This quilt is full of memories for me and if there were ever a fire in my house this would be one of the first things I’d grab before running out. The memories of all the people I met and food I ate and things I did are in this quilt as it is made up from garments I wore during that time.

I used a pattern from Red Pepper Quilts (http://redpepperquilts.bigcartel.com/product/retro-hst-quilt-pattern) and it was absolutely perfect for a beginner like me. It explained basic concepts (locking, cutting perfect squares, batting, binding, etc) that I needed to complete a quilt but nothing advanced or unnecessary for me. The directions were easy to follow and the fact that I completed a quilt is proof enough that this pattern is great.

More photos (in fact perhaps too many) here: http://cathywu.com/journal/treadling/2013/11/25/the-benin-quilt-the-end/

What a beautiful quilt. I always use my leftovers for quilts too. I love the design, very effective, very modern.
