This was supposed to be my Chef D’oeuvre, the best thing I’d ever made, specially for my bf’s work do….sigh. Excuse the non-ironed pictures.
I made a muslin for the first time ever, measured measured then measured some more…Bought some expensive silk and luxury lining, spent 4 weeks getting the fit right, tried on the shell, tried on the lining…used an invisible zip, attached the lining and understitched the neck…spent 4 painstaking hours hand sewing the lining to the shell and attaching diamante…then tried it on…and it broke my heart :-(
It doesn’t fit :-( SOMEWHERE the lining became too small and now I cant even get it on my hips, and the bust gapes. Ah well, there’s several pounds££ and hours I’ll never get back! Not sure my soul can withstand that much unpicking and redoing, its probably not worth it, made my bum look massive hehe.

If it’s any consolation, I love your fabric combination – very flirty and fun :)

According to guru Claire B. Schaeffer they use stays along the neckline to hold the excess in fine garments. She describes it in her book Couture Sewing Secrets. Maybe you can use that method, then you don’d need to make darts or pleats but get rid of some of the excess. When I make patterns (which I don’t do even nearly often enough these days) I always make a dart to shorten the neckline if I make a deep v-neck. Of course though, Burda should have done that for you….

ah very informative thank you :-) Im not sure i have the skills for that though, but good to know that’s how its done and im not going crazy. i noticed if i gather the bottom of the v slightly it seems to work. Loving your projects at the mo, you’ve been busy! :-)

oh thats a shame when you do a v-neck you have to take out excess at the bust its a pain in the arc

Welcome to the club of nightmare. This problem happens ones to me, did you pre-shrink the lining?

Well the fabric and tailoring is so lovely! I’m sorry it disappointed you. Could you try adding a different skirt and pleating the neckline till it fits your bust and cover the stitches with an added decoration? A lot of work for any changes to something that doesn’t fit…I hope my suggestions help you think how you can revive this. You deserve it!

Could you put godetts in it so it fits around the hips? Make the skirt fuller.
And get breast implants?

haha love it! :-)
godetts seems like a good plan though, less expensive than the implants

what heartbreak! I’m so obsessive with fit I try on everything through out the sewing process. Bust dar in….hold up to see how it looks…..shoulder seams done…. pin sides try on…..side seam….try on…… zipper in…. try on…… it helps, prevent disappointing endings.
