Description

I made this dress to take to Bali in July. I had a wonderful holiday at a women’s retreat for 10 days. Yoga, massages, walks on the beach, shopping and sightseeing and this dress was perfect for most of it. This pattern is from Burda Style magazine 2/2013 #114

Thank-you yenny lee. No, this dress is not made of sarongs but of jersey knit. I cannot wear sarongs because they always fall off me.

Great choice of fabric, the dress looks FAB! I am still thinking what to make dress or top. :-). I like your dress much more, then from magazine! :-)

Thank-you so much for your sweet comment. I saw this fabric in my favourite fabric shop and quickly purchased it, not having any real idea what to make with it. This pattern really was meant to be for this fabric. If you make either the top or dress, I am sure you will be happy with both. Just don’t buy a jersey that is too heavy because the waterfall detail will roll forward, making the facing show.

Thanks Kisses. Yes, this fabric was perfect for this pattern. It wasn’t too heavy for the waterfall detail at the front. I think if the fabric is too heavy, the facing rolls forward.

I am going to have to read the camera manual on how to take photos with the timer. Hopefully it will be easy.

Lovely fabric choice! Did you have any problems with a gaping neckline from the weight of the fabric drape there, though? I looked at a similar pattern but was afraid to make it because of that (real or imagined) problem!

Hi Stranger!! No problems with this jersey. It isn’t very heavy but it is very good quality and did exactly as it should. The only tricky thing was cutting it out on my cutting table which wasn’t quite wide enough. It wanted to run away all the time. I think you should give it a go as it is very cool and comfortable and Bali has a similar climate to Singapore. Hope you have been well and sewing lots.

Sorry I’ve gone missing! Been a bit busy of late (and not just with dressmaking ;p ) and when that happens the interwebs is the first thing to drop off the schedule :((. I have hangups because when I try these lovely draped dresses on in shops, the first thing I notice is how they gape, and then I can’t wear them without fussing with inner layers! Admittedly the shop ones are mostly made with lightweight jersey or some cheap stretchy material, and the drape just makes them too heavy for the fabric. I contemplated reinforcing the neckline, but have no idea how to do it! Interfacing of course wouldn’t work for a knit.

You can buy an interfacing that works well with jersey. It looks like webbing or like bandage webbing. It isn’t thick or stiff and gives stability to knit fabrics. You can buy it at Spotlight and I think you have a Spotlight in Singapore.

Hi Marjorie, this looks beautiful. Much nicer than all those sarongs! I can’t believe you made a dress for Bali too. We might start a new trend here.x

Thanks Annie. I always make something for holidays and usually at the very last minute. This dress I did make in plenty of time but the night before I left, I decided I needed navy blue leggings to wear under my Tiramisu dress on the plane. I hate getting cold on planes. Guess what I had to quickly take off when I arrived in Bali!!
PS: I can’t make a sarong stay on so I have to make cool dresses to wear.

Thanks so much once again Velvetribbon. I too love Bali and will definitely go back again. I really didn’t know what to expect when I went but it was so much better than I thought it would be. I didn’t stay near the major tourist resorts but near a very quiet beach.

Thanks Mary. You probably were the one who inspired me to make this dress and it was perfect for the holiday. I sweat quite a bit and Bali has high humidity, so I just would rinse this out and then hang it up overnight and it was ready to wear the next morning. No ironing required!!

Have a look at this link and it will give you a bit of an idea. Bali isn’t too far from Australia and it doesn’t always get a good wrap but I think that is due to most of the party going holiday makers that go there. But for me it was beautiful and the Balinese people were absolutely gorgeous.

It is owned by an Australian lady but women from all over go to it. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
