Baggy trousers on a short girl?
Added Dec 7, 2012
I don’t really know what got to me – I’ve spent all my life being short, and I should know that I should really stay away from baggy trousers.
The Burda picture got to me, of course – a perfect excuse! The interesting drapy pocket detail, and the leggy model looking all relaxed and easy that convinced my feeble mind that I would look the same…
My only saving grace is that I decided, unusually, to make a muslin out of some cheapo stretchy synthetic fabric I’d scrounged from the thrift shop. I thought the print was decently interesting, so that there was potential it might turn into a wearable muslin if it came out right.
The pattern itself was really easy to sew – no surprises there. I used a zigzag stitch and my serger, and didn’t even bother with the ballpoint needle. So I have finally overcome my fear of knits, yay!
The measurements were slightly off though – the waistband was far too loose for the size 38 I cut! The pants slipped all off my waist – the pockets hung down to my knees! (last pic)
I took it in an inch which did slightly better, though if I were to wear it all day I would need a skinny belt under all those folds of fabric to keep it up confidently. This is me modelling my wearable muslin. Depending on how you define ‘wearable’.
In future I will cut the very shortest length (size 34) of waistband. Of course that is a theoretical exercise, because I don’t see myself making it again. Which is a pity, because it is so very comfortable, and so easy to make. Short genes be damned!
