I made a trench coat, using Burda 7786, with a few modifications to make it double breasted. I love its classic style and see it becoming a wardrobe staple that I’ll turn to time and time again…
Most of the outside seams are double top-stitched, and I finished the inside seams with Hong Kong finishes using bias binding I made myself from old black cotton. I lined the inside with soft cotton shirting for an extra layer of warmth..
Ribstop cotton, cotton shirting lining, cotton bias binding

Beautifully constructed and detailed! I like your choice for lining, too. Do most trench coats have a half lining, or is this a variation? I’ve been in the trenches (hehe!) for a few seasons now, but never wanted to lay down the cash for one. How rewarding to say you’ve made it. Summer is coming, but I need to buck up and just make one.

Thankyou for your comment! I’ve seen trench coats with both a full lining and a half lining. The pattern I used for this had a half lining, and in Australia we don’t really get so cold that I thought a full one would be necessary so I just went with the pattern.

Very nice, I have just added the trench coat to my list of “must makes” – its getting so long, but I have to wait until winter considering it is 36 degrees today. I have a Burda magazine pattern but I’ll check out the pattern you used too, thanks for posting it :)

Thanks for your comment! I agree it’s been disgracefully hot in Perth, but I’m so in love with the Burberry trenches this was a “must have” for me…! Bring on autumn!

Argh I know, I can’t bear to change into my latest new items to phoptograph them it’s just way too hot :/ I saw this amazing trench in the latest DJ catalog, that’s what got me all in the trench mood, I think it was a Table8 one in this amazing aubergine purple, now to try and find the right fabric :)
