Description

The beautiful Armani wool, buttons, and pattern for this jacket were birthday gifts from my mother-in-law. She even included matching thread! Over the last many months, I’ve been slowly making this jacket in my free time (when I wasn’t distracted by smaller projects or Sew-Alongs!).

Very Easy Vogue V8429 was a simple and straight forward pattern to follow. This jacket is actually the first piece of clothing I’ve ever made by myself, for myself. My favorite part of the construction was seeing how much structure the lining added to the jacket. Just adding the lining made the jacket go from a few sewn together pieces of fabric to the shell of a jacket.

I love the finished product. I think it has a nice, subtle Asian feel to it that sets it apart from the ready-to-wear jackets I currently own.

More on my blog, Sew Well.

Material Notes

The jacket is made from a beautiful gray Armani wool with the perfect buttons for notions. The lining of the jacket is a black bamboo/cotton blend.

I don’t think you can continue to call yourself a novice if you can capture the Armani look this well. It’s not just the fabric and the buttons, your jacket is beautifully constructed. Brava!

Thanks! Yes, from what I’ve learned this past year of sewing, a nice quality fabric makes a huge difference in the outcome of a garment. Though, there are plenty of amazing projects on this site that have started from a used bed sheet!

Ha! But thank you. To clarify, this actually isn’t my first completed garment. This is the first garment that I ever started, but I took a break in February for Male Pattern Boldness’s Men’s Shirt Sew-Along (which you can see in my projects if you’d like). Since the shirt I made then was for my husband, I still count this as my first piece of clothing for myself. I also helped make my wedding dress, but I did so little for it that I also don’t count it either.

I’m glad you like the jacket. It’s wonderful getting such a compliment from someone who’s been sewing so long. As for the fabric store, FineFabrics.com ships overseas. I’m not sure if there would be too many customs fees to make it worth your while, but I have never been disappointed from a single fabric that I’ve purchased from FineFabrics.com.

Thank you! And, yes, I was really excited when I opened my birthday present this year. My mother-in-law has been wonderfully supportive for my sewing hobby. I’m newly married, and it’s been a good way for us to bond.

Thanks! As both the fabric and pattern were gifts, I can’t take credit for pairing them together, but I think they perfectly compliment the interesting and beautiful character of each other.

    Simply stunning!

    Luv those buttons.

The jacket is like an origami envelope containing a person. High art, that’s what it is.

Thank you! The fabric really does make the pattern. And, fortunately for my novice skills, fitting a coat is pretty straight forward. It was definitely a good beginner project.
