Aqua Maxi Dress

Added May 12, 2013

Placentia, Calif...

This is my first maxi dress. I used Burdstyle’s 5/2013 #123 pattern. I struggled with the bust portion of this dress. The two and a half dot rating for skill level was a bit deceiving or I was just having problems understanding Burdastyle’s instructions. I ended up having to rip seams open and figure out how to do the draped bodice portion on my own really. But a bit of a challenge helps you grow. Once I got past the bodice portion everything else was easy.

I like how this dress flows in a nice breeze and it won’t be last maxi dress.

Great result! I am struggling with the same pattern. I could not figure out how the buste pieces fitted together. Would you have any insights to share???

Thank you! Yes. I abandoned the instructions for the bodice and did what I thought might work. I sewed the bodice fronts and the inside lining right side together. Then I gathered the edges that would be sewn to the front straps and then sewed it to the straps. I had to rip everything apart after trying to follow the instructions before i did what I did and then it was easy after that. I hope that helps you.

Beautiful dress! Congrats on finishing such a complex design for your first maxidress…very impressive. Don’t worry, we ALL struggle to understand BurdaStyle instructions, it’s not just you trust me :)

It’s a great dress, this style is very nice on you. I have made a similar pattern from issue 7/2009 and I like it a lot!
